Australian continent, which is larger than the continental United States, has relatively few freshwater fish, only some 280 species or more. Most of these species are endemic to Australia. Australia is unique in that Percicthyidae (Temperate perches) family and other families who alleged in reality lie in it (eg Gadopsidae, Nannopercidae) have risen to prominence and dominate many freshwater systems, in contrast to the Northern Hemisphere where freshwater fish fauna which is dominated by the family (Carp) Cyprinidae. (Not a single species of Australian native Cyprinid Unfortunately due to the illegal introduction of Carp (Cyprinus carpio) Cyprinidae family now comes in the form of destructive in Australia ..) The Galaxiidae also rose to prominence unusual in Australia, with most of the world Galaxias species found in Australia and neighboring New Zealand's land mass.
Freshwater systems, the most important in Australia is the Murray-Darling Basin which drains about 13% of the continent and is home to some of the most significant species of freshwater fish in Australia including the iconic Murray Cod, the largest in Australia.
Australian freshwater fish have not fared well since European settlement in Australia in 1788. The majority of Australia's freshwater fish are poorly understood and under threat due to human activities such as clearing of riparian vegetation and sedimentation associated with agricultural practices, the removal of barriers, overfishing, river regulation through dams and weirs, fish and introduced diseases. Two native fish populations that may have been a separate species or subspecies, Richmond River Cod and the Brisbane River Cod, has been lost, and several other species listed as endangered or threatened species.[Edit] Murray CodMain article: Murray CodA Murray Cod

Fishing is quite popular on Lake Burley Griffin is the most common species illegally introduced into Carp. The lake has been filled every year with a variety of native and introduced species and more than 1.26 million fish have been released since 1964. Annual monitoring conducted to determine fish populations. 2001 survey only returned Carp and Redfin perch, both introduced species, native perch and Gold. However, a number of less common species also inhabit the lake, including the Murray Cod native, Western Silver Carp Gudgeon and perch, and introduced Goldfish, Gambusia, Rainbow trout and Brown trout.
There are many changes in fish populations in lakes and stocking practices since it was first filled. Stockings of introduced trout have been abandoned as the lake has been proven to be a warm, eutrophic habitats that are unsuitable for the survival of introduced trout species.
Stocking routine since the early 1980s has established a reasonable population of Golden perch and Murray cod are very difficult to understand; native fish that are native to Molonglo River before the lake was built. Today, Golden perch and Murray cod is a fish stocked in the lake. Murray cod are remarkable as freshwater fish for extreme sizes they achieve and this is particularly the case for Lake Burley Griffin-; specimen to about 38 kg have been recorded and no doubt there are some that even larger Murray cod in the lake.
Through natural breeding introduced Redfin perch has become a prominent species of fish in the lake. The Redfin cycle numbers for the regular onslaught of the epidemic haematopoietic necrosis (EHN) virus, an endemic virus that is lethal to the mysterious teenager Redfin. After the EHN virus attack, which left a huge reach Redfin size during the next few years due to reduced food competition. During this period of reduced competition could grow up to 50cm Redfin, an unusually large for this species. This large Redfin offers excellent fishing.
Carp are best pursued in the lake with a small hook baited with canned corn kernels and heavy lead little or nothing. Redfin is best pursued with a variety of small jigs in the form of soft plastic worms and fish. Place the gold and Murray Cod are best pursued with live bait or in yabby-diving lures and spinnerbaits. Golden Place is not too difficult to catch but Murray Cod is, frustratingly difficult to understand. Baits are best used in medium depth areas that have weedbeds, rocks and drop-off as a fish-pull structure,
The Golden perch and Murray cod in lake-rich diet developed high levels of fat and muddy flavor in their meat, which makes them bad eating. Anglers are encouraged to release fish and maintain native species introduced to eat, especially fish Redfin the table very well.[Edit] Victoria
